Gökhan Hotamışlıgil Biography

Dr. Gokhan S. Hotamisligil, M.D., Ph.D. is Scientific Founder of Syndexa and is the James Stevens Simmons Professor of Genetics and Metabolism and Chair of the Department of Genetics and Complex Diseases at Harvard University. Prof. Hotamisligil has been a Member of Scientific Advisory Board of Lipomics Technologies, Inc. since October 25, 2005. Prof. Hotamisligil serves as a Member of Scientific Advisory Board at Syndexa Pharmaceuticals Corp. His research focuses on the genetic basis of complex diseases, particularly obesity, diabetes and heart disease. He is a globally recognized leader in this field and has made many seminal contributions, including uncovering several key underlying mechanisms in these major disorders such as the identification of the first molecular pathways linking obesity and diabetes and the inflammatory origin of obesity, diabetes and associated diseases. He has been recognized by fellowships and awards from Markey, Pew, and Sandler Foundations, American Diabetes Associationm National Institutes of Health and the endowed J.s. Simmons Professorship at Harvard University. He is an inventor on many patents; all related to obesity, diabetes and atherosclerosis and engaged in drug development programs for the treatment of metabolic diseases. Prof. Hotamisligil holds his M.D. from Ankara Universiry in Turkeym and agter his clinical fellowship training he completed his Ph.D. degree in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical School.
